2009 Tournament & Early Arrivals 2010

Photos from early winter 2009-SVPC

Lots of players have returned for the winter season 2009-10. Some of those players, including new players, are shown here watching while others are playing. In one short year it seems that we have outgrown our two great courts. Participants expectations remain at the highest level. We have new bleachers installed and court lighting is soon to follow.

We had 2 days of Tournament chatter . . . . people seemed to be enjoying the events, the weather, and good company. This first tournament in 2009 was open to all Sun Village residents.

And the tournament is off and running.

A C T I O N

Waiting for the first serve, and then it all began, and Sportmanship prevailed.

Sharing a lighter moment.

Especially during an event final, it was all business, all fun, all telling. This tournament was successful because of the participation of great neighbor's here in Sun Village.

Some court time for Kim.

With his wife refereeing, Ron looks to be returning a strong serve.

Consentration, Lutz at tournament play.

Ready set serve.

Ahhh, the Dean's, a family team fighting for a metal in mixed doubles.

Some serious action, under the watchful eye of the referee Chuck.

Questions ?, lots of questions.

Action in the mens doubles.

Tournament ended with a picnic of sorts held at the Sun Village Courts.

Lots of participants and spectators enjoyed the action on center court.

The 2009 Gold Medal winners in the Members Random Draw - Doubles event, Bill McWilliam and Jerry Erickson.

Second place winners of Silver Medals in the Members Random Draw - Doubles were Mick Kunkel and Rich Nenortas shown here with Official and club member Cynthia.

Gold Medal winners in mixed doubles were Rich Nenortas and Lyn Holt.

.

Silver Medals were awarded to Bonnie and Rudy Dean . . . . . for their second place finish in the mixed doubles.

.
The Men's Doubles awards were Gold Medals to Jerry Erickson and Rich Nenortas and the Silver Medals were won by Ron Bryetta and Kim Peters. They are shown here with our 'athletic supporter' aka Activities Director for Sun Village Adrienne Miller.

.
The Women's Mixed Doubles winners were Macyes Schmaus and Lynn Holt, Gold Medals; and Cynthia Helfich and Lois Roberts, Silver Medals. Again shown here with the Activities Director for Sun Village, Adrienne Miller.

Then there was Joyce who had to try the medals on because it was 'just a fun thing to do'. She claims she'll be a winner in 2010.

Just the participation brought smiles. . . . then again winning also brought big smiles, and lucky for the official he's got a big smile.

A couple of the different winners discussing just how it is done . . . or was that how it should be done.

This is the Gold Medal award presented to all first place winners. Silver Medal's were presented to all second place winners in each event. They were all engraved on the reverse side as example shown on the silver metal below, with the date, placement, and event.

Meeting Minutes

Sun Village Pickleball Club Meeting

January 18, 2010
11AM Ocotillo Room

Meeting was called to order by President Bud Siefert. All board members were present.

Meeting opened with the Treasurer's report, A bank balance of $608.52 was reported.

Cynthia Helfrich shared information about the sold out Valantines Candlelight and Roses Dance the SVPC is hosting to help get more exposure of pickleball in the Sun Village community. There will be a 50/50 raffle, corsages provided for the women to be assembled the Thursday before the dance, and a decorated arch for photo opportunities. A sign up Kokopelli sheet was passed for volunteers to make 2 dozen “finger” deserts each for the dance. Deserts are to be brought to the Kachina Ball Room Friday Feb 12 between 11 am and 3 pm.

Chuck Beck co-chair of the SVPC annual tournament for 2010 announced the tournament will be held March 1st , 2nd, 3rd and 4th of March with a Potluck picnic on Friday the 5th. Men's, Women's, Mixed and Mandatory Blind draw events will cost club members $5 ($7 non-member) for the first 2 events and $2 ($3 non-member) for the 3rd event entered. It was mentioned that posting of the SVPC Tournament dates and information with the Activities Office as well as an announcement on Channel 22 would help promote the tournament.

Cynthia announced a permanent banner with adjustable dates for the tournament for $50 has been ordered and will arrive in February.

Managing the increasing number of players wanting to play during the 8-11 club members only time was opened to discussion. It was decided that rally scoring to 15 (not needing to be serving to win) would be used whenever there are 4 or more players waiting. House guests of club members are welcome up to 2 weeks.

The 4pm Thursday afternoon ladies beginner skills clinics directed by Cynthia Helfrich has been a great success with 8 to 10 ladies learning pickleball each week. Cynthia challenged someone to step up and start a men's beginner clinic but no one accepted the challenge.

Dick McComb, Sun Village Manager, stopped in to report that the lights for the pickleball courts are being evaluated and hopefully redirected for better lighting of the courts allowing more opportunity for evening play. There was also some discussion of constructing more pickleball courts.

Respectfully submitted by:
Bonnie Dean SVPC Secretary

Tournament 2009 News Article

An Event Happened (AZ)
SUN VILLAGE, Surprise, AZ - It was discovered, last Tuesday March 23rd, and again on Wednesday March 24th, that fun was returning to Sun Village. Amazed residents stared dumbfounded at about 26 talented senior neighbors hovered around the new Pickle Ball courts. Yes, everyone began to recognize the meaning of both men and women dueling it out, why it must be the first such tournament of its kind in the village.

"At first I thought like, it was just a party," Wayne Stein, 60ish, said, "then I like, looked closer and I realized it looked kind of like, a similar to a game." He explained they had just learned about the events which were going to happen. Everyone was learning about a different culture, one where FUN prevailed, friendships strengthened, and talent hit a historical level.

His fellow neighbor, Ms. Bonnie Dean, 50ish, observed, "When Mr. Stein spoke, ready on court one – ready on court two a new era was about to encase the village forever.” We all thought like, ya this is just unbelievable!" With the residents of SV approving the new game courts, individuals stepping up and supporting a new club, we were undertaking a milestone by saying, “It is time to celebrate the beginning of a tournament where GOLD and SILVER medals ruled the awards and where the WHOLE VILLAGE was given an opportunity, experienced or not, to share in playing the new game in SV.”

The whole village could come down to marvel at this site and events. Sportsmanship prevailed and a lifetime of memories were created for many.

"Sure we've seen champions, but none quite like these neighbors," exclaimed Wayne. "I am petitioning each of you to congratulate those earning the award medals, and acknowledge each participant with a ‘well done old chap’” This event is as in all cases, only as successful as those willing to participate will make it. A very special thanks to all-you know who-you are truly winners, and another thanks to those who Officiated the matches.

Wayne reports, “The 16 medal awards were presented to: Rich Nenortas, Mick Kunkel, Rudy Dean, Bonnie Dean, Kim Peters, Ron Breyette, Cynthia Helfrich and Lois Roberts all receiving SILVER MEDALS; Bill McWilliam, Rich Nenortas (2), Lyn Holt (2), Jerry Erickson (2), and Marcyes Schmaus took the GOLD MEDALS.” The 2009 Pickle Ball tournament included these 4 events: a Blind Draw Doubles for SVPC members only, Mixed Doubles, and individual Men and Women’s Doubles.

The Sun Village Pickle Ball Club invites our whole community to come to the courts and participate in a great game. Most club members are there each weekday morning from 9 to 11.
